City Library Extension
Client: City University
Sector: Education
Status: Competition Entry
This competition entry explored the potential for a roof extension to the library of City University to provide additional, flexible, study and meeting space. Like most inner-city universities, City is reviewing it’s property portfolio to enhance it’s existing assets to cope with increased student numbers and a higher expectation for quality services.
The proposal built off the Library’s existing structural grid and orientated a new modular roof to allow plentiful north light into the floor plate, while reducing the solar gains from the south. The modular system would allow for greater spans than a traditional roof, while improving build-ability and access within a tight London inner-city site. New light tunnels were proposed to bring natural light down into the existing study spaces in the library.
